Lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides are far more stable than reconstituted solutions, but they are not indestructible. Heat, light, and moisture are the three enemies. Here's the storage protocol we recommend and follow in our own U.S. facilities.
Unopened vials
Store sealed, lyophilized vials at -20°C for long-term storage (12+ months) or 2–8°C for shorter periods. Keep vials in their original packaging or an opaque container to block light.
Humidity control
Every time a cold vial is opened at room temperature, moisture condenses inside. Let vials equilibrate to room temperature for 20–30 minutes before opening, and re-seal promptly. A desiccator is a worthwhile investment for frequently accessed stock.
Reconstituted solutions
Once reconstituted, stability drops dramatically. Use bacteriostatic water or the appropriate buffer, store at 2–8°C, and follow the compound-specific stability window. Never freeze-thaw solutions repeatedly — aliquot instead.
Signs of degradation
Discoloration, clumping, or failure to dissolve cleanly can indicate degradation. When in doubt, contact our research support with your batch number and we'll confirm against the lot record.
